Abductor tendinopathy

Abductor tendinopathy (also known as Trochanteric Bursitis or Abductor Tears) is an inflammation of the trochanteric bursa, and early degeneration of the abductor tendons may lead to lateral hip pain (pain on the side of the hip). Initial management usually consists of physiotherapy. Techniques such as dry needling and deep tissue massage can be tried. Shock wave therapy may be beneficial in some patients. If pain persists, then injections of of local anaesthetic and cortisone to the focally tender area may help. In refractory cases, Arthroscopic iliotibial band (ITB) release and excision of trochanteric bursa for recalcitrant trochanteric bursitis. If there are associated tears of the abductor tendons, then an open approach with formal repair of the torn tendons +/- reconstruction with synthetic graft may be required.
